Today’s !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! features my very own bike! A post-facelift KLR! I’m actually surprised at the level of detail they got in it. Though I wish the color scheme was a bit less....Kawasaki-y. Worst case scenario, it’s a motorcycling shirt.

How are liking the bike? My wife still wants me to sell the Cougar and get a bike because it would take up less space. Ha.

I both love and HATE KLRs.

love because its so brutaly simple and reliable.

hate because otherwise, its an objectively terrible bike.

I’ve had that Blipshift moment:

“Well, I guess I can’t not buy that one...”

Yeah it rides like a 20 year old bike on stilts....but it’s actually a 30 year old bike on stilts.

It works for me though. I don’t ride every day and I like riding off road so the simplicity is more important than the constant maintenance my old nighthawk needed due to being an old bike. THe nighthawk had a lot more spirit though. Also, it nears 60mpg, sometimes well over that if you can ride it in the 45-55mph range.

Once I settle into a house or something, I’m looking into an XSR700 or maybe a triumph street twin.

It’s every bit as reliable as its reputation says it is, but it’s a bit sloppy and numb to ride as a corner carver. For cruising and commuting? Easygoing nature combined with tall tires and seating position gives it great comfort and the 650cc let it ride on the highway (but only just).

I love mine for weekend rides off road and occasional commuting. Don’t know if I’d get one to ride everyday on pavement only.

I always compared my klr I had to a willy’s jeeps— Nothing fast about it- don’t expect it to corner, performance just doesn’t exist.. All the KLR guys on the forums always complained about the “tweety” exhaust note.. But I thought that was a plus because it always reminded me of the sound of the jeeps on the MASH tv show.....

But reliable AF and will get you where ever you want to go in the mountains every single time.

I’ve likened them a bit more to the bigger, heavier land cruisers. 250cc dual sports are more like old school jeeps or jeep wranglers. But the sentiment is still there- handle like ass, can’t go for shit, but are effectively the unstoppable force once they get going. I ride through potholes and over speedbumps and debris without really caring too much. I also hop curbs in both directions and have a bit of a callous attitude to small nicks and damages. Heck, I’m pretty sure most sports bikes would be scrapped if they took the hits and falls that mine has....and all those did was make me use a ziptie to keep a piece of plastic on.
